Hiatus? What Gives?

I know, I know, I know. Bad blogger! Taking a hiatus without telling your dedicated, literature-hungry readers. For shame! Well, between changing jobs and finding a new apartment I admit I shifted my blogging to the backburner. But I'm back!
And to show that I'm truly sorry, I'm going to do two book reviews in one post. Like you care!

 Cutting for Stone
Verghese has tapped the medical drama market with this one. And I especially enjoyed this read because it's more of an international novel, taking place primarily in Ethiopia. Verghese's work is lengthy and initially hard to jump on board with the plot. But how can you blame me? He starts out with a pregnant nun. Essentially, this a story about destiny. And I think destiny is something everyone mulls over now and again. Unless you are me, in which case you question destiny's role in your life nearly every moment. Am I supposed to be on this bus? What if the bus leaving ten minutes from now has a $20 bill on it just waiting to be found? And it goes on.

I truly have no criticisms of Verghese's novel. This would be a great beach book. Just sayin'.

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
My first mistress in my nonfiction love affair, Krakauer's account of Mormonism was simply awesome. Just because you watch Sister Wives doesn't mean you know boo about Mormonism, especially because Krakauer debunks the first idea that pops into many minds at the mention of Mormonism: polygamy. Polygamy is so fundamentalist, brah. So read this book.  You'll be interested to see who receives your tax dollars...

Short and sweet, just the way I like my cupcakes. And speaking of cupcakes, last month I attended the Cupcake Camp in Somerville, and it was unbelievable! It was free, but I donated $5 to support whatever charity they had going on at the time (sorry, I was distracted by all the free cupcakes). Among the many varieties of yumminess I sampled, I have to say that trying a Guinness cupcake was the most enjoyable. Mainly because I don't like Guinness. This event allowed for both local bakeries and independent bakers to showcase their goods. If there is a Cupcake Camp in your city, I would advise skipping dinner beforehand (rookie mistake...).

Now, consider me back on track! Next up: Edwidge Danticat's Breath, Eyes, Memory and Flour Bakery, Farnsworth Street, Boston.
