Lulu's

"I'm in love! I'm in love! And I don't care who knows it!" I am also the proud owner of 8 cupcakes.
8 cupcakes is a lot. I know this. Herein we find the tragic flaw of sites like Groupon and Living Social. Back in January, Living Social had an offer for $10 worth of $20 to spend at Lulu's, which I naturally pounced on. $20, yes, but you have to use all at once. So I left Lulu's with a whopping collection of deliciousness. What does this tell you? Lulu's is much more reasonably priced than Sweet.

Let's take a moment to acknowledge the adorable factor on the cupcake I chose to nom after dinner (ironically, from Lily's Gourmet Pasta):

I know what you're thinking, but this is ain't no Hostess cupcake. And I'm fairly certain that equating any food in the North End with something that can survive a nuclear winter is the severest form of blaspheme.

So, was it any good? In the words of my roommate, recipient of the classic vanilla cupcake from my multitude of tastiness, "om my god eh so goofdh." She's at her classiest with her mouth full. What was my favorite part about the goods from Lulu's? It incorporated my favorite food (cupcake) with my favorite pastime (surprises!). In the middle of what I assumed to be an entirely chocolate cupcake was a white cream filling. I should have known from the Lulu's icing banner.

In all seriousness: Lulu's knocked Sweet out of the park. Sweet had the dainty factor, the idea of treating yourself to a luxury snack. But Lulu's exceeded even my North End-xpectations. The woman behind the counter was knowledgeable and helpful. She even put the cupcakes with cream cheese frosting in a different container for refrigeration. What a gal! You can also feed your inner child at Lulu's by choosing from their stockpile of candies. Even though it was about half the size of Sweet, Lulu's is the clear victor here.

As I struggle to freedom from my Italian food coma, I head to the gym. And tomorrow, to an office full of happy coworkers, who will be chowing on cupcakes as their hump day treat.

  1. Yum, wish I was in Boston to check this place out! You will have to make a guest appearance at Queen of Tarts to sample our cupcakes on your next visit. Also, book suggestion, David Sedaris "Dress Your Children in Courduroy and Denim" amazingly hilarious memoir. You will love it.
